چکیده

Diabetic nephropathy is a major cause of endstage renal disease worldwide and is characterised by persistent albuminuria, functional and structural changes in the glomerulus. Patients with diabetes mellitus with kidney damage are at higher risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events.1 Evidence shows that nitric oxide pathway plays an important role in the development of vascular complication in diabetes. Nitric oxide levels are decreased in diabetic nephropathy due to increased asymmetric dimethyl arginine (ADMA) which is a competitive inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase.2 Microalbuminuria is the first detectable sign of renal dysfunction in diabet ic patients. Both ADMA and microalbuminuria represent markers of endothelial dysfunction which increases the cardiovascular risk in these patients. Therefore this study was designed to study asymmetric dimethyl arginine levels in patients with diabetic nephropathy and its association with proteinuria.

Dysregulation of dimethylargininedimethylaminohydrolase/asymmetric dimethylarginine pathway in rat type II diabetic nephropathy

An impaired generation of nitric oxide has been associated with diabetic renal disease. In order to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms into how nitric oxide synthesis is impaired in diabetic renal disease, we examined changes in activities and expressions of some renal enzymes involved in nitric oxide production during the development of diabetic nephropathy in type II diabetic Otsuk...

Plasma concentration of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) predicts cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in type 1 diabetic patients with diabetic nephropathy.

OBJECTIVE To investigate whether circulating asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) levels are predictive of cardiovascular events, decline in glomerular filtration rate (GFR), end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and all-cause mortality in type 1 diabetic patients. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We performed a prospective observational follow-up study including 397 type 1 diabetic patients with overt di...

Asymmetric dimethylarginine is closely associated with the development and progression of nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND Nitric oxide (NO) is thought to play an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. We conducted a prospective, observational cohort study to explore the relationship between plasma levels of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous inhibitor of NO synthase, and the development and progression of nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes. METHODS This wa...

Elevated plasma asymmetric dimethylarginine as a marker of cardiovascular morbidity in early diabetic nephropathy in type 1 diabetes.

OBJECTIVE Increased plasma concentration of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase, has been associated with endothelial dysfunction, insulin resistance, and atherosclerosis in nondiabetic populations. In end-stage renal failure, circulating ADMA is elevated and a strong predictor of cardiovascular outcome. This study investigated the relation betwe...

Diabetic Retinopathy Is Associated With Elevated Serum Asymmetric and Symmetric Dimethylarginines

OBJECTIVE Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), and l-arginine directly influence nitric oxide production. Our objective was to test whether serum ADMA, SDMA, or l-arginine levels correlate with diabetic retinopathy subtype or severity. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS A total of 162 subjects with type 1 diabetes and 343 with type 2 diabetes, of whom 329 subjects h...
